What Civil Engineer Cards Include

Your License and Credentials

Professional Engineer (PE) license:

  • P.E. (Professional Engineer) — the most important credential a civil engineer can display on a business card; state-issued license after passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, gaining 4 years of qualifying experience, and passing the NCEES Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam in your discipline; the PE license is the "engineer of record" — only a PE can stamp and seal engineering documents, design reports, plans, and calculations
  • S.E. (Structural Engineer) — a separate, more rigorous structural engineering license available in some states (California, Illinois, and a handful of others); requires passing additional examinations beyond the PE; the highest structural engineering credential
  • G.E. (Geotechnical Engineer) — California-specific geotechnical engineering license; separate from PE
  • P.Eng. (Professional Engineer — Canada) — Canadian equivalent

NCEES exam progression:

  • E.I.T. (Engineer in Training) — passed the FE exam; pre-PE designation for engineers working toward PE; also "EIT" or "EI"
  • F.E. (Fundamentals of Engineering) — FE exam pass; same as EIT

  • D.GE (Diplomate, Geotechnical Engineering) — ASCE; the highest geotechnical engineering specialty designation
