Pilot Business Cards for Commercial and Airline Transport Pilots

Commercial pilots and airline transport pilots (ATPs) are the professional aviators who operate aircraft for hire in commercial aviation, corporate aviation, charter, cargo, and aerial work. Professional pilot credentials are FAA-issued (in the US) and internationally recognized through ICAO standards, with specific ratings for aircraft type, instrument operations, and multiengine flight.

What Pilot Cards Include

Your FAA Certificates and Ratings

  • ATP (Airline Transport Pilot Certificate) — FAA; the highest pilot certificate; required to serve as PIC (Pilot-in-Command) of an air carrier aircraft; requires 1,500 hours total flight time (with exceptions for military and Part 141 paths), multiengine instrument rating, and written + practical exam
  • ATP-R (Airline Transport Pilot Certificate — Restricted) — ATP with restricted privileges (lower hours path via Part 141 or military service)
  • CPL (Commercial Pilot License) — FAA; below ATP; allows compensation flying; required for charter, cargo, aerial work below ATP thresholds
  • CFI (Certified Flight Instructor) — FAA; authorized to give flight instruction; separate from an airline pilot career but many pilots hold CFI
  • CFII (Certified Flight Instructor — Instrument) — authorized to instruct in instrument flying
  • MEI (Multiengine Instructor) — authorized to instruct in multiengine aircraft
  • CFIG (Certified Flight Instructor — Glider) — glider instruction
  • Type ratings — required to act as PIC in large aircraft and turbojet aircraft; typically noted as "Type Rated: B737, A320, CE-525, CL-60" etc.
  • Instrument Rating (IR) — required for IFR flight; included in ATP
  • Multiengine Rating (ME) — required for multiengine aircraft
  • Gold Seal CFI — FAA recognition for CFIs with high student pass rates (if instructor)

Flight Hours (Important for Networking)

For pilots, flight hours are the primary resume:

  • Total flight time: "[X,XXX] hours TT"
  • PIC time: "[X,XXX] hours PIC"
  • Turbine time: "[X,XXX] hours turbine" (valuable for airline / corporate transition)
  • Type-specific hours: "[XXX] hours in B737" or "[XXX] hours in CJ3"

Your Aviation Role

  • Airline First Officer (FO) — first officer at a commercial airline; "First Officer, [Airline]"
  • Airline Captain — PIC at a commercial airline; "Captain, [Airline]"
  • Corporate Pilot — pilot for a company flight department; "Corporate Pilot"
  • Charter Pilot — flies charter; Part 135 operations
  • Cargo Pilot — Part 135 or 121 cargo operations
  • Fractional Pilot — NetJets, Flexjet, Wheels Up, etc.
  • Flight Instructor (CFI) — teaches student, instrument, multiengine
  • Check Airman / DPE — designated examiner (very senior)
  • Aviation Safety Inspector (ASI) — FAA
  • Helicopter Pilot — rotorcraft specialty

Your Aircraft and Type Ratings

Type ratings and aircraft familiarity are important:

  • Airliners: Boeing 737 (all variants), A320/A321, B757, B767, B777, B787, A330, A350, ERJ-145/170/175, CRJ-200/700/900, ATR-42/72, Dash 8/Q400
  • Business jets: Cessna Citation (CE-525, CE-560XL, CE-680), Gulfstream (G200, G450, G550, G650), Bombardier (CL-60, BD-700), Dassault Falcon, Embraer Phenom/Praetor/Legacy, Pilatus PC-12
  • Helicopters: Bell 206/407, Robinson R44/R66, Airbus H120/H130/H135, Sikorsky S-76

Professional Memberships

  • ALPA member (Air Line Pilots Association) — the primary airline pilot union
  • NBAA member (National Business Aviation Association) — business aviation
  • AOPA member (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) — general aviation
  • HAI member (Helicopter Association International) — helicopter pilots
  • EAA member (Experimental Aircraft Association) — general aviation / experimental

Design for Pilots

Aviation Authority, Precision, Professional

Pilot card design:

  • Aviation aesthetic
  • Military precision or airline professional
  • Blue-sky and flight imagery

Color palette:

  • Navy blue + white: professional aviation authority
  • Dark gray + sky blue accent: modern pilot professional
  • Deep navy + silver: airline captain gravitas
