Environmental Scientist and Geologist Business Cards for PE Environmental Engineering Professionals

Environmental scientists, hydrogeologists, environmental geologists, and environmental engineers are the licensed professionals who assess environmental contamination, model groundwater and soil conditions, design and manage site remediation programs, prepare environmental impact assessments, and ensure that industrial, development, and resource extraction activities comply with federal, state, and local environmental regulations — protecting both human health and the natural environment from the consequences of past, present, and proposed activities.

What Environmental Professional Cards Include

Your Credentials

Engineering license:

  • P.E. (Professional Engineer) — Environmental — NCEES licensed PE in environmental engineering; the primary credential for environmental engineers; requires FE exam + 4 years experience + PE exam; state-issued; enables signing and sealing environmental engineering documents, reports, and remedial designs
  • P.E. — Civil — some environmental professionals hold civil PE rather than environmental PE, particularly those with civil engineering backgrounds doing site development and stormwater work
  • NCEES Record — multi-state PE practice mobility

Geology license:

  • P.G. (Professional Geologist) or LG (Licensed Geologist) — state-issued; most states with geology licensure require education + experience + state geology examination; designations vary: P.G. (most states), L.G. (California), CPG (various), Geologist License
  • CPG (Certified Professional Geologist) — American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG); the primary national geology certification; requires bachelor's or higher in geology + 5 years experience + peer review; AIPG member required
  • AIPG member (American Institute of Professional Geologists) — primary professional organization for geologists
  • PG exam — most states require passing the ASBOG (Association of State Boards of Geology) FG (Fundamentals of Geology) and PG (Practice of Geology) examinations

Hydrogeology:

  • CHG (Certified Hydrogeologist) — American Institute of Hydrology (AIH); requires education + experience + examination; for groundwater-focused professionals
  • PH (Professional Hydrologist) — AIH; hydrology specialty

Environmental health and hazmat:

  • CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager) — IHMM (Institute of Hazardous Materials Management); the primary hazardous materials management credential; requires education + experience + passing the CHMM examination; demonstrates competency in hazardous materials identification, storage, transportation, disposal, and regulatory compliance
  • CSHM (Certified Safety and Health Manager) — IHMM; safety and health specialty
  • CESCL (Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead) — state-specific; stormwater and construction site
  • CEP (Certified Environmental Professional) — National Registry of Environmental Professionals (NREP); broad environmental credential; requires experience + examination
  • CPESC (Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control) — IECA; construction stormwater specialty

OSHA and safety:

  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER — EPA and OSHA; required for all workers on contaminated sites; field safety foundational credential; also 24-hour HAZWOPER for occasional hazmat work
  • OSHA 30 Construction — general construction safety; many environmental consultants hold this for field work
  • SSO (Site Safety Officer) — field safety role; often combined with hazwoper training

Ecological and wetlands:

  • PWS (Professional Wetland Scientist) — SWSS (Society of Wetland Scientists); wetland identification, delineation, assessment
  • CWB (Certified Wildlife Biologist) — TWS (The Wildlife Society); wildlife assessment specialty
  • Certified Ecologist — ESA (Ecological Society of America)

Your Environmental Practice Specialty

Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments:

  • Phase I ESA (ASTM E1527-21) — historical research and records review; potential environmental liability identification; required for commercial property transactions
  • Phase II ESA (ASTM E1903) — soil and groundwater sampling; confirming presence or absence of contamination
  • Recognized Environmental Conditions (RECs) — Phase I findings
  • Environmental Due Diligence for commercial real estate, M&A, development

Soil and groundwater contamination:

  • Site characterization (soil borings, monitoring wells, groundwater sampling)
  • Groundwater monitoring programs
  • Remediation technology selection (pump-and-treat, in-situ chemical oxidation ISCO, permeable reactive barriers, soil vapor extraction, multi-phase extraction, air sparging, bioremediation)
  • Monitoring well installation and sampling
  • Vapor intrusion investigation and mitigation
  • LNAPL and DNAPL characterization and remediation
  • Underground Storage Tank (UST) programs (state UST programs, closure, remediation)

Environmental regulatory compliance:

  • RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) compliance and permitting
  • CERCLA / Superfund site investigation and remediation (PRP defense, RI/FS)
  • State voluntary cleanup programs (VCP/Brownfields)
  • Clean Air Act permitting (air emissions modeling, BACT analysis)
  • Clean Water Act compliance (NPDES permits, wetlands Section 404 permits)
  • NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) environmental assessments and EISs
  • EPCRA (Tier II) reporting; TRI (Toxics Release Inventory) reporting

Brownfields and redevelopment:

  • Brownfields assessment and redevelopment planning
  • EPA Brownfields grants and cleanup programs
  • Institutional controls (IC) and land use controls (LUC)
  • Risk-based closure (RBCA — Risk-Based Corrective Action)

Ecological services:

  • Wetland delineation and permitting (Army Corps Section 404 / state Section 401)
  • Natural resource damage assessment (NRDA)
  • Ecological risk assessment
  • Biological and wildlife surveys
  • Habitat mitigation and restoration

Design for Environmental Professionals

Color palette:

  • Forest green + white: environmental protection and nature
  • Navy + white: environmental engineering authority
  • Earth brown + green: geology and environmental science
  • Teal + white: water resources and environmental
