Master electricians, journeyman electricians, and electrical contractors are the licensed tradespeople who design, install, inspect, maintain, and repair electrical systems — from the residential panel upgrade that allows a homeowner to add an EV charger to the complex industrial electrical system that powers manufacturing processes and keeps production lines running.
What Electrician Cards Include
Your Licenses and Credentials
Electrician license levels (state-issued):
- Apprentice Electrician — registered apprenticeship; working toward journeyman; 4–5 year NJATC or nonunion apprenticeship
- Journeyman Electrician (JW) — licensed to perform electrical work under the supervision of or as an employee of a master electrician or electrical contractor; requires completing an apprenticeship + passing state journeyman examination; most states require ongoing CE for renewal
- Master Electrician — the highest electrician license; authorizes pulling permits, supervising journeyman electricians, and (in most states) operating as an electrical contracting business; requires journeyman experience (typically 4–8 years) + passing state master electrician examination; license must be maintained in each state of practice
- Residential Wireman / Wireman Apprentice — some states have residential-only licenses
Electrical contractor license:
- Licensed Electrical Contractor (EC) — state licensing for electrical contracting businesses; typically requires a master electrician as qualifying party; separate from individual electrician license in most states; business-level license to legally perform electrical work for hire
Specialty licenses and certifications:
- Low Voltage Contractor — some states license low voltage (data, alarm, AV) separately
- Fire Alarm System Installer — NICET or state license for fire alarm installation
- NICET Electrical Power Testing — testing and commissioning specialty
- OSHA 10 / OSHA 30 Construction — workplace safety; often required on commercial jobsites
- NFPA 70E Electrical Safety in the Workplace — arc flash and electrical safety certification; important for commercial and industrial electricians
- QMESP (Qualified Maintenance Electrician for Solar Photovoltaic Systems) — NABCEP adjacent
- NABCEP PV Installation Professional — North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners; the leading solar installation credential; many solar electricians hold NABCEP certification
- Tesla Certified Installer — for residential Powerwall and EV charging installation
- EV Charger Installation Certified — EVITP (Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program) certification for EV charging station installation
- Generator Installation Specialist — Generac, Kohler, or Briggs & Stratton dealer certification
Union membership:
- IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) member — the primary electricians' union; locals throughout the US and Canada; IBEW membership signals high training standards, ongoing education, and journeyperson status
- NECA (National Electrical Contractors Association) signatory — for electrical contractors that have collective bargaining agreements with IBEW
- ABC (Associated Builders and Contractors) — non-union electrical contractor association
