Occupational Therapist Business Cards for OTR-L NBCOT Certified OT Professionals

Occupational therapists (OTs) are the health and rehabilitation professionals who help individuals of all ages and abilities participate meaningfully in the activities that matter most to them — called "occupations" in OT terminology — including self-care activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), work and productive activities, play and leisure, rest and sleep, social participation, and education. OTs work in hospitals (acute care, inpatient rehabilitation), outpatient clinics, skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, public schools and early intervention programs, mental health facilities, and private practice.

What Occupational Therapist Cards Include

Your Credentials and Certifications

Core OT credentials:

  • OTR (Occupational Therapist Registered) — the primary national credential; awarded by NBCOT (National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy) upon passing the NBCOT Occupational Therapist examination; indicates that the OT has met NBCOT's educational and examination requirements; "OTR" or "OTR/L" after name
  • OTR/L (Occupational Therapist Registered / Licensed) — the most complete credential designation; "OTR" (NBCOT national credential) + "L" (state licensure); the standard designation in most states
  • NBCOT Certified OT — also used; indicates current NBCOT certification (requires renewal every 5 years through CEUs)

Academic degrees:

  • B.S. in OT — older degree (being phased out; most programs now require graduate entry level)
  • M.S. in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) — the current entry-level graduate degree for most accredited OT programs; 2.5–3 year graduate program from a ACOTE-accredited program + Level II fieldwork
  • MOT (Master of Occupational Therapy) — equivalent to MSOT; some programs use this degree name
  • OTD (Doctor of Occupational Therapy) — clinical doctorate; 3-year doctoral program; increasingly common as entry-level degree; "OTD" after name; the OTD is analogous to DPT for PT
  • Ph.D. in OT or Rehabilitation Science — research doctorate for academia and research
  • OT-R — some countries (Canada, UK) use different designation conventions

State OT licensure:

  • All 50 states + D.C. license occupational therapists; "Licensed OT" or "OTR/L" (the /L indicates licensed)
  • State license numbers may need to appear on professional materials in some states

AOTA (American Occupational Therapy Association):

  • AOTA member — the primary national OT professional organization
  • FAOTA (Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association) — honorary distinction for significant contributions to the profession

Specialty certifications:

Hand therapy:

  • CHT (Certified Hand Therapist) — Hand Therapy Certification Commission (HTCC); the premier specialty credential in hand therapy; requires OTR or PT license + 4,000 hours of direct hand therapy practice + passing the CHT examination; OTs are the largest group of CHTs (approximately 65% of CHTs are OTs; 35% are PTs); "CHT" is a powerful differentiator for hand therapy practice

Sensory processing:

  • Certified DIR/Floortime therapist — DIR/Floortime Institute; evidence-based relationship-based developmental intervention; primarily for autism and developmental differences
  • Certified SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder) OT — Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation training
  • SIPT (Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests) certified — Western Psychological Services; sensory integration assessment
  • C-SIPT (Certified in Sensory Integration and Praxis Testing) — AOTA specialty certification (now SASSI - Sensory Aspects of Sensory and Social Integration)

  • CPRP (Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner) — USPRA; mental health psychiatric rehabilitation specialty

  • DIR/Floortime certified — developmental intervention for autism
  • NDTA (Neurodevelopmental Treatment Association) — NDT treatment technique for CP and neurological conditions

Driving rehabilitation:

  • CDRS (Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist) — ADED; driving evaluation and rehabilitation specialty; requires OTR or PT + 2 years driving rehab experience + passing exam

Aging and home modification:

  • CAPS (Certified Aging in Place Specialist) — NAHB; for OTs specializing in home modification and senior living
  • ECHM (Environmental Consultant in Home Modifications) — home assessment specialty

Assistive technology:

  • ATP (Assistive Technology Professional) — RESNA; AT assessment, recommendation, and training

Neuro specialty:

  • CBIS (Certified Brain Injury Specialist) — ACBIS; for OTs working with TBI
