Optometrist Business Cards for OD Doctor of Optometry and Eye Care Professional

Optometrists are the primary eye care providers who examine eyes and visual systems, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, diagnose and treat eye diseases and visual anomalies, prescribe ophthalmic pharmaceutical agents in states with that authority, and provide the continuing vision care that patients depend on throughout their lives for visual performance, comfortable vision, and long-term ocular health.

What Optometrist Cards Include

Your Credentials

Degree and licensure:

  • O.D. (Doctor of Optometry) — the professional degree; 4-year postgraduate professional program at an ACOE-accredited optometry school (Southern College of Optometry, Pacific University, Ohio State, Illinois College of Optometry, New England College of Optometry, UC Berkeley, NSU, Salus, etc.) after completing pre-optometry coursework; the primary credential and the title licensed optometrists use
  • State Optometry License — state board of optometry license; required in all states; NBEO (National Board of Examiners in Optometry) examination Part I, Part II, and Part III (TMOD — Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease); state-specific jurisprudence exam; current license must be maintained
  • DEA registration — required for prescribing controlled substances (Schedule III-V drugs used in optometry, like hydrocodone for post-surgical pain management)

TPA (Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents) certification:

  • TPA certified — Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents certification; most states now authorize optometrists to use and prescribe topical and oral pharmaceutical agents for diagnosis and treatment of ocular disease; TPA certification demonstrates authority to prescribe anti-infective drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs, cycloplegic/mydriatic agents, glaucoma medications, anti-allergy medications, and in some states oral medications
  • OPA (Optometric Physician) — some states designate optometrists with full prescriptive authority as Optometric Physicians (or similar titles); Florida is the notable example
  • Certified to perform laser procedures — some states have passed legislation allowing optometrists to perform certain laser procedures (SLT for glaucoma, photorefractive surgery in some states); this is evolving

AOA and specialty:

  • AOA (American Optometric Association) member — the primary national optometric organization; AOA member optometrists demonstrate professional commitment; AOA provides advocacy, education, and clinical resources
  • AAOPT (American Academy of Optometry) Fellow (FAAO) — Fellowship, American Academy of Optometry; the highest achievement in optometry; requires passing the Academy examinations and peer review; demonstrates clinical expertise beyond the O.D. degree; "F.A.A.O." follows the O.D. on cards
  • AOA Fellow — some state optometric associations use "Fellow" designation
  • State Optometric Association member — SOA state affiliate membership

Specialty optometry credentials:

  • BCVO (Board Certified in Vision Development and Vision Therapy) — COVD (College of Optometrists in Vision Development); developmental optometry specialty; vision therapy certification; requires passing Fellowship examination and clinical review; "F.C.O.V.D." — Fellow, COVD
  • FAAO — Low Vision — Fellow of American Academy of Optometry in Low Vision subspecialty
  • CLSA (Contact Lens Society of America) member — contact lens specialty
  • GSLS (Global Specialty Lens Symposium) — advanced contact lens specialty (scleral, orthokeratology)
  • Corneal Specialist designation — for optometrists specializing in corneal disease and specialty contact lenses
