Pharmacist Business Cards for RPh PharmD Licensed Clinical and Retail Pharmacy Professionals
Pharmacists are the doctorate-level healthcare professionals who hold the deepest clinical knowledge of medications in the healthcare system — from the molecular mechanisms by which drugs work to the drug-drug interactions that can cause harm, the pharmacokinetic parameters that determine optimal dosing in renal and hepatic impairment, and the counseling skills that ensure patients understand how to take their medications safely and effectively.
What Pharmacist Cards Include
Your Credentials
Pharmacy degrees:
- Pharm.D. (Doctor of Pharmacy) — the entry-level professional degree for all pharmacy programs accredited by ACPE (Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education) since 2004; 4-year professional program (after 2 years of pre-pharmacy); the standard degree for all new pharmacists; use "Pharm.D." prominently
- R.Ph. (Registered Pharmacist) — the state licensure designation; grandfathered pharmacists with B.S. Pharmacy degrees use R.Ph.; newer pharmacists hold both Pharm.D. + state license (which is sometimes called R.Ph. or simply "Licensed Pharmacist")
- B.S. Pharmacy — older degree; still in use by practicing pharmacists who earned their degree before Pharm.D. became universal; grandfathered
- M.S. (Pharmacy Administration, Pharmacology, etc.) — master's degrees in pharmacy-adjacent fields; useful for pharmacists in management or research roles
- Ph.D. (Pharmacology or Pharmaceutical Sciences) — for research or academic pharmacy
- MBA — for pharmacist executives and pharmacy directors
State pharmacy license:
- State Pharmacist License — state board of pharmacy license; required to practice; all states require NAPLEX (North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination) + MPJE (Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination) passing scores; reciprocity or endorsement in multiple states
- Multi-state licensure — some pharmacists are licensed in multiple states; relevant for telepharmacy or travel pharmacy
- DEA registration — required to dispense controlled substances; some pharmacists note this
ASHP and clinical credentialing:
- PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency — ASHP-accredited 1-year clinical pharmacy residency; significantly differentiates clinical pharmacists from community pharmacy
- PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency — specialty residency in a specific area (critical care, oncology, cardiology, infectious disease, ambulatory care, pediatrics, etc.) following PGY-1
- APhA member (American Pharmacists Association) — the primary national pharmacy organization
- ASHP member (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists) — for hospital and health-system pharmacists
- ACCP member (American College of Clinical Pharmacy) — clinical pharmacy specialty
BPS (Board of Pharmacy Specialties) certifications — the gold standard clinical credentials:
- BCPS (Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist) — BPS; the foundational clinical pharmacy specialty; broad clinical pharmacy; requires 4+ years pharmacy practice experience + examination
- BCACP (Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist) — BPS; primary care and ambulatory clinic pharmacy
- BCCCP (Board Certified Critical Care Pharmacist) — BPS; ICU and critical care pharmacy
