Business Cards for Salons and Spas: Finishes, Appointment Cards, and the Referral Play
A salon or spa business card is handed over at the end of a service — right when the client feels their best. That moment is the highest receptivity point for brand impression. A card that looks as good as the experience reinforces that good feeling.
What salon clients do with business cards
Salon cards are most often passed to friends as referrals ("Here's my stylist") or kept to book the next appointment. Both uses have design implications: the referral card needs to communicate credibility quickly to someone who's never heard of the business; the repeat-booking card needs to be easy to act on.
Best finishes for salon and spa cards
Soft-touch matte — the most on-brand finish for most salons. Velvety surface, premium feel, memorable texture. Clients who are already attuned to sensory experience notice it.
Foil on logo or business name — gold or rose gold foil on a soft-touch matte base is the go-to combination for upscale salons and spas. The metallic accent signals quality without being loud.
Glossy laminate — suitable for studios that want vibrant color imagery. Works well if your card includes a product or service photo.
Appointment card design
Many salons use one card that doubles as a business card and appointment card — back side has fields for date/time/service. This works but has limitations: once the appointment slot is filled in, the card loses its referral function. A cleaner approach is to use separate appointment cards and keep the business card clean for referral.
If you combine them, keep the appointment fields minimal — Date, Time, Provider — and still leave room for your website or booking QR.
What to include on a salon business card
- Business name and logo
- Individual stylist/technician name (if the card is for a specific person, not just the business)
- Services — "Hair Color & Cuts," "Laser & Skincare," "Nail Studio" — one clean descriptor
- Phone or text number (for appointment requests)
- Website or online booking URL
- QR code linked to online booking — this is extremely effective for salons
- Instagram handle — if you post client work regularly, this shows portfolio
The referral play
A simple approach: hand every departing client two cards instead of one, and say "one for you, one for a friend." The verbal prompt combined with having a second card makes the referral much more likely to happen.
For high-retention businesses, adding a referral incentive to the back of the card ("Give this card to a friend — they get $10 off their first visit") converts the card from a contact card to an active marketing tool.
