Business Card Thickness & Cardstock: pt, GSM, and What We Print

“How thick should a business card be?” is really two questions — how thick (measured in points or microns) and how heavy (measured in GSM). This guide untangles the two, shows what 14pt, 16pt and 32pt actually feel like, and points you to the premium cardstock Pro Card Crafters prints on.

Point (pt) = thickness

A point is caliper — the physical thickness of the card. 1pt = one-thousandth of an inch, so a 16pt card is 0.016 in (about 406 microns) thick. US printers usually label cards this way.

GSM = weight

GSM is grams per square meter — how heavy the paper is. Thicker stock is usually heavier, but the two are not directly convertible. We spec our stock in GSM and microns, so this guide bridges both scales.

Business card thickness at a glance

Caliper (microns) is the exact thickness for each point value. GSM figures are typical for standard coated cover stock and are approximate — density varies by paper.

PointCaliper (thickness)Typical GSMHow it feels
12pt≈ 305 μm (0.012 in)≈ 250–300 gsmLight, flexible — common on budget cards. Bends easily in a wallet.
14pt≈ 356 μm (0.014 in)≈ 300–350 gsmThe everyday professional weight. Solid, prints crisp, holds its shape.
16pt≈ 406 μm (0.016 in)≈ 350–400 gsmNoticeably sturdier than 14pt — a small step up in rigidity and snap.
18pt≈ 457 μm (0.018 in)≈ 400–450 gsmHeavy, premium-feeling single-ply stock.
32pt≈ 813 μm (0.032 in)≈ 600–700 gsmUltra-thick — almost always two plies laminated together ("double / triple thick"). A specialty item, not a standard card.

14pt vs 16pt: which should you pick?

14pt (≈356 microns) is the everyday professional standard — solid, crisp, and what most people already read as a quality card. 16pt (≈406 microns) adds roughly 14% more caliper, so it feels a little more rigid with a firmer snap. Neither is “better” in the abstract: 14pt is the safe, versatile default, while 16pt is worth it if you specifically want the card to feel heavier the moment it’s handed over. Both sit comfortably in premium territory — the real jump in perceived quality comes from the stock and the finish, not from the last fraction of a millimeter.

What Pro Card Crafters prints on

A note on honesty: we don’t produce 32pt / double- or triple-thick laminated cards, and we don’t make solid-metal cards. If ultra-heavy laminate is a hard requirement, we aren’t the right printer — but if you’re really after a card that feels premium, our heaviest stocks and specialty finishes get you there. The exact caliper for any product is shown in the online designer before you order.

Common questions

What is the difference between pt (point) and GSM on a business card?

They measure two different things. A point (pt) is caliper — the physical thickness of the card, where 1pt = one-thousandth of an inch (so 16pt = 0.016 in ≈ 406 microns). GSM is weight — grams per square meter of the paper. Thicker stock is usually heavier, but the two are not directly convertible because different papers pack more or less weight into the same thickness. US printers tend to label by point; Pro Card Crafters specs its stock by GSM and microns, which is why this guide bridges the two.

Is a 16pt business card thicker than a 14pt?

Yes. 14pt is about 356 microns (0.014 in) and 16pt is about 406 microns (0.016 in) — roughly a 14% jump in caliper. In hand, 16pt feels a touch more rigid and gives a firmer "snap," while 14pt is the everyday professional standard that most people read as high quality. Both are far sturdier than the 12pt stock common on budget cards.

How thick are Pro Card Crafters business cards?

Our standard and premium business cards print on substantial coated stock in the roughly 300–350 GSM range, with specialty and luxury stocks specified in microns. That is a genuine premium-weight card — firm, professional, and a clear step above thin budget stock — not the flimsy card you get from bulk discount printers. The exact stock and caliper for your chosen product are shown in the online designer before you order.

Do you offer 32pt or triple-thick business cards?

No — we want to be upfront about that. 32pt / double- and triple-thick cards are an ultra-heavy specialty format (usually two plies laminated together, ~600–700 GSM) that we do not produce. If you want a card that still feels distinctly premium, our heaviest coated and specialty stocks deliver that heft, and finishes like foil, raised spot gloss, embossing, and cotton stock add the tactile "expensive" quality that thickness alone is often chasing.

Which matters more for a premium feel — thickness or finish?

Weight is the baseline: below about 300 GSM a card reads as cheap no matter what. Once you are on a solid 300–350 GSM+ stock, finish is what makes a card memorable — foil stamping, raised spot gloss (spot UV), embossing/debossing, and textured cotton stock all change how the card is received far more than another fraction of a millimeter of thickness. The best-feeling cards combine a substantial stock with one deliberate finish.

What GSM is equivalent to 14pt or 16pt?

As a working reference, 14pt cards are typically around 300–350 GSM and 16pt around 350–400 GSM on standard coated cover stock — but treat these as approximate, since GSM is weight and pt is thickness. Use the caliper (microns) column above for the true thickness comparison, and check the designer for the exact spec of the stock you select.
