Understanding DPI vs. PPI

DPI (dots per inch) refers to the number of ink dots a printer lays down per inch of output. PPI (pixels per inch) refers to the number of pixels in one inch of a digital image file. The two terms are often used interchangeably, but the practical question is the same: does the image file have enough pixels to look sharp at the intended print size?

Recommended Resolution by Viewing Distance

  • Close-up (held in hand): 300 DPI
  • Medium distance (wall-mounted poster): 150–200 DPI
  • Long distance (banners, large displays): 72–100 DPI

Posters are typically viewed from a distance of at least a few feet, so 150 DPI is often sufficient — but if your poster will be viewed up close, aim for 300 DPI.

The Pixel Calculation Formula

The formula is straightforward:

Required pixels = (dimension in mm ÷ 25.4) × DPI

For example, to print an A1 poster (594×841mm) at 150 DPI:

File Format and Color Integrity

Resolution isn't the only thing that matters — file format is equally critical. Large-format print files are typically submitted as PDF/X or high-quality TIFF. JPG compression degrades fine detail, so if you must use JPG, save at maximum quality and avoid re-saving the same file repeatedly (each save introduces another round of compression).

Flattening and Linked Images

If your file was built in Photoshop with multiple layers, flatten it or export to PDF before submission. If you used linked (externally referenced) images in Illustrator, either embed them in the file or include the original image files when submitting, to prevent missing-image errors.

Bleed and Safe Zone

If color or imagery extends to the edge of the poster, include a 3mm bleed beyond the trim line. Keep any text or critical content at least 5mm inside the trim line (the safe zone). The larger the format, the more visible a trim error becomes, so give yourself adequate margins.
