Choosing the Right Business Card Stock

Picking a paper stock is the single biggest decision for how your business card feels in someone's hand. Here's how to choose without getting lost in printer jargon.

Weight matters first

Stock weight is measured in gsm (grams per square meter) or pt (points) depending on the printer. For premium cards we recommend 400 gsm or higher — anything lighter feels flimsy when you hand it over.

  • 300 gsm — standard, everyday cards. Works fine for high-volume networking.
  • 400 gsm — premium, the sweet spot for most professionals.
  • 600 gsm — ultra-thick, luxury feel. Memorable but costs more.

Finish changes the entire impression

Once you've chosen a weight, the finish is what the other person actually feels and sees.

Matte — flat, non-reflective surface. Looks sophisticated and reads well in all lighting. Fingerprints show less than glossy.

Glossy — shiny, high-contrast surface. Colors look more saturated. Best for photo-heavy cards like realtor headshots.

Soft-touch matte — velvety, rubber-like texture. The most tactile of the common options. People comment on it.

Uncoated — raw paper feel. Favored by architects, creatives, and attorneys who want something understated.

Specialty finishes worth considering

If you want your card to stand out from the stack on someone's desk:

  • Spot UV — a high-gloss coating applied to specific areas (your logo, a shape). Creates visual contrast on a matte base.
  • Foil stamping — metallic foil pressed into the paper. Gold, silver, rose gold, holographic.
  • Embossing / debossing — raises or recesses your design without ink. Subtle and tactile.
Pro tip: pair a soft-touch matte laminate with spot UV on your logo for a tactile contrast that people can't stop touching.

What to choose by profession

| Profession | Recommended stock | |---|---| | Realtor | 400 gsm glossy or soft-touch with headshot | | Contractor | 400 gsm matte, heavy laminate for durability | | Attorney | 400 gsm uncoated or matte, restrained finish | | Photographer | 400 gsm glossy, full-bleed image on back | | Salon / Spa | Soft-touch matte, foil accent on logo | | Consultant | 400 gsm matte, minimal, sophisticated |

The cheapest mistake you can make

Ordering the cheapest stock to save a few dollars, then handing out a flimsy card that undercuts the brand you've spent years building. A set of 250 premium cards costs less than a single lunch — spend the extra.
