5 Sticker Design Mistakes to Avoid

Stickers look simple to design. They're not. A few common mistakes account for most of the reprints and disappointments we see. Avoid these five and your stickers will look exactly how you intended.

1. Forgetting the bleed

Bleed is the zone of artwork that extends beyond the cut line. Without bleed, a tiny shift during cutting (completely normal — cutting has tolerances) leaves a thin white sliver along one or more edges.

The fix: Extend your background color or design at least 3mm past the cut edge on all sides. This gives the cutter a margin for error without affecting the visible design.

2. Text too close to the edge

Keep important text and design elements inside the safe zone — at least 3mm inward from the cut edge. The tolerance that makes bleed necessary also applies in reverse: a cut can land slightly inside your design area.

Text or logos right at the edge will sometimes get clipped. Keep them away from the danger zone.

3. Low-resolution artwork

Upload artwork at 300 DPI at the final print size. A logo exported at 72 DPI (screen resolution) that looks crisp at 3" on your monitor will look pixelated when printed at 3".

If you're not sure about your file's resolution:

• Vector formats (AI, EPS, PDF from Illustrator) are resolution-independent — they're always fine
• Raster formats (PNG, JPG, PSD) need to be at 300 DPI at the output size

4. Ignoring the cut shape

Die-cut, kiss-cut, and circle cuts each frame your design differently. If you designed for a rectangle but ordered a die-cut to a custom shape, the original design probably won't translate well.

Draw the cut shape in your design file first, then design within it. Don't design the content and then pick the shape.

5. Skipping the digital proof

Most reprints happen because someone approved a proof without really looking at it. Check the proof for:

• Color shifts from your original file
• Text errors (especially phone numbers and URLs)
• Elements that got clipped or cut off
• Background that doesn't extend to the bleed line

A two-minute proof review is far cheaper than a full reprint.
