Business Card Paper Weight and Thickness: Choosing the Right Card Stock
The paper weight and thickness of your business card is the first thing people feel when they take your card — before they read your name, before they see your logo. A flimsy thin card whispers that you don't take the details seriously. A thick, sturdy card signals quality and confidence. Understanding paper weights and point sizes helps you choose the right card stock for your professional context and budget.
How Business Card Thickness Is Measured
Point Size (pt)
The most common measurement for business card thickness in the US is points (abbreviated "pt"). One point equals 1/1000 of an inch.
- 14pt: 0.014 inches thick — the standard minimum for business cards
- 16pt: 0.016 inches thick — the most common standard-quality card
- 18pt: 0.018 inches thick — a slightly thicker "premium" card
- 24pt: 0.024 inches thick — distinctly premium; noticeably heavier
- 32pt: 0.032 inches thick — the luxury thick card; feels like a playing card
- 55pt (or higher): Ultra-thick specialty cards, sometimes with cotton or metal layers
Reference for context:
- A standard playing card (like a poker card) is approximately 32pt
- A credit card is approximately 30pt
- Standard business cards from quick-print services are often 14pt or 16pt
Pound (lb) or GSM
You may also see paper weights expressed in pounds (lb) or grams per square meter (GSM):
- 80 lb cover / 216 GSM — equivalent to approximately 14pt; standard
- 100 lb cover / 270 GSM — approximately 16pt; common for quality business cards
- 130 lb cover / 350 GSM — approximately 18-20pt; premium
Which is more intuitive? Point size for business cards specifically (it directly describes thickness). GSM is more common in Europe and in general paper discussions.
Standard Business Card Thicknesses by Category
Economy Cards (14pt / 80 lb cover)
- The minimum you'll typically see from business card printers
- Noticeably thin — can feel insubstantial in the hand
- Works fine for high-volume giveaway cards, cards that will be discarded quickly
- Not appropriate for premium professionals or as a first impression tool
Standard Cards (16pt / 100 lb cover)
- The most common business card thickness
- Feels professional and sturdy
- Appropriate for most professional and business contexts
- Typically what you'll get from ProCardCrafters standard options
- Coating (matte or glossy) often applied on top of 16pt stock
Premium Cards (18-24pt / 130 lb cover)
- Noticeably heavier than standard
- Immediate tactile impression of quality
- Common in professional services (law, finance, real estate, executive)
- Usually has a matte or soft-touch laminate applied
Luxury Thick Cards (32pt+)
- The ultra-thick card format — feels almost like a playing card
- Dramatic premium impression
- Often made by laminating 2-3 layers together (duplex or triplex)
- Colored core layers visible at the edge (a design feature)
- Used in luxury real estate, luxury brands, creative professionals, executive contexts
Triplex Cards (3-Layer Laminate)
Triplex cards are 3 layers bonded together, typically with a contrasting-color center layer:
- Thickness: typically 32-40pt
- Edge shows the contrasting middle layer — a sophisticated design detail
- Very stiff and substantial
- Premium pricing
Coating vs. Thickness
An important distinction: the coating applied to the card (matte laminate, glossy laminate, soft-touch) is separate from the underlying paper thickness. A 16pt card with soft-touch laminate feels quite premium because of the coating, even though the underlying paper is standard.
Common combinations:
- 16pt + Glossy laminate: standard photo-quality card
- 16pt + Matte laminate: professional standard, soft feel
- 16pt + Soft-touch laminate: premium tactile feel at standard thickness cost
- 32pt + Matte or uncoated: ultra-thick luxury card
Does Thickness Affect Card Dimensions?
No — thickness doesn't change the standard 3.5 × 2 inch card dimensions. A 32pt card is the same size as a 14pt card; it's just thicker.
However: Very thick cards may not fit standard cardholders or slim wallets. If your clients use card cases designed for standard cards, a 32pt card may not fit or may pop out. This is usually intentional — the card is meant to be kept out, not filed.
