Edge Painted Business Cards: Colors, Techniques, and Design Considerations

Edge painting is one of the most distinctive business card finishing techniques — color applied to the narrow cut edges of the card that creates an unexpected detail visible only when the card is held at an angle or from the side. Done well, it's the kind of finishing detail that makes recipients say "that's a beautiful card."

What Is Edge Painting?

Edge painting (also called "edge coloring" or "edge gilding") applies paint, foil, or ink to the narrow exposed sides of the card. A standard business card is approximately 14pt-16pt thick — about 0.014-0.016 inches — and the edge paint covers all four of these narrow sides.

For edge painting to be visible and effective, the card stock must be thick enough for the edge to have visual presence:

  • Standard 14pt: Minimum for edge painting — visible, but a thin band
  • 16pt: Good thickness for edge painting — clear, attractive
  • 18pt / 2-ply 32pt: Excellent for edge painting — wider, more prominent
  • Triple-thick / 3-ply 40pt+: Best for dramatic edge paint — the edge becomes a significant design element at this thickness

Edge Paint Techniques

Painted / Inked Edge

Liquid paint or ink applied by hand or machine to card edges:

  • Can be any color (CMYK range)
  • Soft-edged, natural appearance
  • May have slight irregularity (gives hand-finished character)
  • Best for watercolor-like or organic effects

Foil Edge

Foil (metallic) applied to card edges:

  • Gold, silver, rose gold, copper, holographic foil options
  • Sharp, bright metallic band
  • High precision, consistent appearance
  • More expensive than painted edge

Neon / Fluorescent Edge

Bright neon colors — electric pink, neon yellow, electric blue — applied to edges:

  • Very high-impact, attention-getting
  • Popular with creative industries, entertainment, modern brands

Kraft / Natural Edge

Leaving the card edge natural (uncoated, natural paper color):

  • For cards with natural / kraft card stock
  • The brown or cream natural edge can itself be a deliberate design choice

Choosing Edge Paint Color

Match Your Brand

  • Brand primary color on edge: A gold edge on a navy card mirrors the gold logo inside — elegant consistency
  • Contrasting accent color: Dark navy card with a bright coral edge — the surprise contrast is the point
  • Complementary: Sage green card with a warm terracotta edge

Popular Edge + Card Combinations

  • Black card + gold foil edge: The most classic luxury edge combo
  • Black card + rose gold edge: Modern luxury
  • White card + deep navy edge: Clean, classic
  • Cream card + forest green edge: Organic, botanical
  • Kraft card + copper edge: Warm, artisan
  • Navy card + bright coral edge: Contemporary, bold
  • White card + neon pink/yellow edge: Energetic, creative industry

Edge Color Visibility

The edge is seen intermittently — when the card is picked up, set down at an angle, or fanned in a card holder. Design for the surprise:

  • Subtle (tone-on-tone): soft-touch grey card with silver edge — sophisticated but not flashy
  • Visible contrast: the color appears when the card is handled and is the memorable finishing touch

Card Design Considerations for Edge Painting

Bleed to the Edge

If your card design has any background color extending to the edge:

  • Ensure the design bleeds fully to the cut — otherwise a white halo appears at the card edge, visible as a gap between the printed face and the painted edge
  • Standard 0.125" bleed is essential

Keep Text and Logos Away from the Edge

  • Important design elements should be at least 0.125" inside the safe zone — printed cards are cut with some tolerance, and paint slightly overlaps the card face at the cut line
  • If the paint overlaps a text character, it creates a messy appearance

Match Finish to Card Face

  • Matte laminate card + gloss/metallic edge: satisfying contrast
  • Gloss card + matte edge: less common but works
  • Uncoated card + foil edge: the natural paper texture against precision foil

Which Professionals Benefit Most from Edge Painting

Highest impact:

  • Fashion, beauty, and lifestyle brands: Edge color as a fashion accessory signal
  • Creative professionals: The card itself is portfolio work — a beautifully executed detail signals design sensibility
  • Luxury real estate, wedding professionals: Premium signal to clients who notice quality
  • Attorneys and financial advisors: Gold or silver foil edge on thick card stock = gravitas
  • Interior designers, architects, florists: The card as a design object, not just information

Lower impact:

  • High-volume distribution: Edge paint adds significant cost — at large quantities it's expensive
  • Professions where clients won't notice: Some industries don't value card quality

Pricing for Edge Painting

Edge painting is significantly more expensive than standard printing:

  • Painted edge (100-250 qty): Add $50-150 to base card price
  • Foil edge (100-250 qty): Add $75-200 to base card price
  • Per-card estimate: Edge painting typically adds $0.35-1.50 per card

For 100 premium cards with edge painting, expect $150-350 for the edge finish alone.
